I believe that museums are gateways to any part of the world, in any time period and beyond. It is up to us who are actively and passionately engaged in museum work to do everything in our power to create fully accessible and equitable experiences so all people have equal opportunity to benefit from the wealth of knowledge and inspiration museums have to offer. That is why with my work, DEIA leads the way!

Bio

Britt Oates (she/her/hers) is a passion-driven anthropologist, museum professional, and creative/forward thinker with a decade of interdisciplinary experience inspiring and facilitating informal cultural and science education and engagement. Britt holds degrees in general anthropology with a focus on socio-cultural anthropology and archaeology and has been incorporating her anthropological interests in the museum sector with experience in exhibit development, museum programming, visitor services, and operations, all while juggling the responsibilities of being a single mother. In the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter and social justice movements Britt grew motivated to focus her endeavors on activist anthropology and exhibit development through a DEIA lens. She developed the DEIA-centered Coming Home: WWII and the San Fernando Valley exhibit with The Museum of the San Fernando Valley in Northridge, CA (a Los Angeles suburb), and the Pacoima Historical Society. Britt has also proudly partnered with five mutually dedicated professionals to establish Agate Creatives where she continues to contribute her talents as a museum professional to help the team create revolutionary experiences surrounding anti-racism and social justice.

Previously, Britt worked on the development of the Dogs! A Science Tail (traveling) exhibition with the California Science Center, focusing primarily on producing its live programming, serving as one of the exhibition spokespersons, and coordinating its national tour. She has also collaborated with curators from the Cairo Museum (Egypt) for the 2018 debut of the King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh exhibition tour at the California Science Center. Britt managed the visitors services staff and served as a resident expert on the exhibition and general Egyptology, conducting VIP exhibition tours and community lectures throughout its run. Britt also has experience conducting exhibit condition reporting and specialized exhibit research using methods such as focus groups and visitor surveys, in addition to visitor services management.
